The Mzuzu University Tourism Incubation Centre, in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), has officially opened applications for an intensive Business Development Services (BDS) incubation programme under the More Income and Employment in Rural Areas (MIERA III) Project. This initiative is designed to strengthen tourism-sector small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malawi, with a strong focus on women, youth, climate resilience, and green transformation.
The incubation programme is part of the third phase of the MIERA initiative, which is being implemented by GIZ in partnership with Malawi’s Department of Tourism, through GOPA AFC and Mzuzu University’s Tourism Incubation Centre. The programme aims to improve income generation, job creation, and sustainable business practices in rural and peri-urban tourism economies.
About the MIERA III Programme
MIERA III is a development programme focused on enhancing the competitiveness and resilience of tourism-sector SMEs. Recognising tourism as a key driver of employment and local economic growth, the project seeks to support enterprises in strengthening their business processes, improving service delivery, and adopting innovative, climate-smart, and gender-responsive approaches.
In the short term, the programme will help participating enterprises improve:
- Business operations and management systems
- Service quality and customer experience
- Creativity, innovation, and product development
- Operational efficiency and record keeping
In the medium to long term, the programme aims to:
- Increase profitability and household incomes
- Create new employment opportunities
- Strengthen enterprise competitiveness
- Promote climate resilience and green transformation
- Encourage environmentally responsible and inclusive business practices
Who Can Apply?
The Mzuzu University Tourism Incubation Centre is inviting applications from suitably qualified tourism-related SMEs operating in Malawi. Eligible enterprises include, but are not limited to:
- Tour guides and tour operators
- Travel agencies
- Accommodation and lodge operators
- Restaurants and catering businesses
- Car hire services
- Curio sellers and souvenir businesses
- Arts and crafts producers
- Club and bar owners
- Cultural troupes
- Community or village-based tourism enterprises
Both registered and semi-formal businesses are encouraged to apply, particularly those with growth potential and a willingness to improve their operations through structured training and mentorship.
Programme Structure and Duration
The incubation programme is scheduled to commence on 9 February 2026 and will run for a period of two months, covering February and March 2026. During this time, selected participants will undergo an intensive Business Development Services (BDS) programme, delivered through training sessions, practical exercises, and advisory support.
The programme will focus on:
- Business planning and financial management
- Customer service and market positioning
- Innovation and creativity in tourism products
- Digital readiness and access to online information
- Climate-smart solutions and green business transformation
Emphasis on Climate-Smart and Green Practices
A key pillar of the MIERA III programme is environmental sustainability. Applicants are encouraged to reflect on current and planned climate-smart practices, such as:
- Energy efficiency and solar power usage
- Waste reduction, recycling, and reuse
- Water conservation practices
- Eco-friendly packaging and materials
- Tree planting and green space management
Participants will also explore how climate-smart solutions can reduce operating costs, improve brand reputation, attract environmentally conscious tourists, and contribute to long-term business sustainability.
