Uppsala University is inviting applications for two fully funded PhD positions in Peace and Conflict Research at its internationally renowned Department of Peace and Conflict Research (DPCR). Established in 1971, the department is one of the world’s leading centres for peace research, hosting a vibrant, globally oriented academic environment.

The positions are open for the 2026 doctoral intake, with one general PhD position and one specialised PhD position focusing on nuclear disarmament in collaboration with the Alva Myrdal Centre for Nuclear Disarmament.

Available PhD Positions

1. General PhD Position in Peace and Conflict Research

Applicants are invited to propose an original doctoral research project related to peace and conflict research. The topic is open, provided it fits within the department’s research scope and traditions.

2. PhD Position in Peace and Conflict Research (Nuclear Disarmament Focus)

This position is affiliated with the Alva Myrdal Centre for Nuclear Disarmament (AMC). The research may address themes such as arms control, non-proliferation, nuclear diplomacy, treaties, sanctions, risk reduction, or the role of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in nuclear disarmament and verification.

Candidates are encouraged to develop innovative qualitative or quantitative research designs aligned with the objectives of the AMC.

Work Description

PhD candidates primarily focus on their doctoral research and coursework.

  • Up to 20% of working time may involve teaching and administrative duties

  • Full-time doctoral studies within the Department of Peace and Conflict Research

Funding, Salary, and Employment Conditions

  • Fully funded PhD positions

  • Full-time employment (100%)

  • Salary according to Uppsala University’s doctoral salary scale

  • Start date: 1 September 2026, or as otherwise agreed

  • Initial employment as a doctoral candidate with standard extensions according to progress

Eligibility and Qualifications

To be considered, applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for admission to the DPCR PhD programme, assessed based on academic merit and research potential.

  • Completed doctoral application form

  • Curriculum Vitae

  • Certified academic transcripts

  • Research proposal (3–5 pages, excluding references)

  • Up to two reference letters or referees

  • One to three academic writing samples
