The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) has officially launched a new self paced online course designed to strengthen the digital competencies of youth and adult literacy educators across the globe. The course titled Improving the Digital Competencies of Literacy Educators was launched on 18 February and is available in Arabic, French, and Spanish, making it accessible to educators from diverse regions.
The course was developed with the support of Huawei, a Global Alliance for Literacy Associate Member. It responds to the growing need for educators to confidently navigate and actively shape the digital transformation of education and society. By offering the course in multiple languages, UIL reinforces its commitment to inclusive lifelong learning and equitable access to professional development.
The Importance of Digital Competencies for Literacy Educators
In today’s technology mediated world, digital competencies are essential for meaningful participation in education, work, and society. Literacy educators play a key role in helping youth and adult learners adapt to digital environments, access information responsibly, and benefit from lifelong learning opportunities.
Speaking during the launch, Isabell Kempf, Director of UIL, highlighted that strengthening educators’ digital skills is vital for supporting inclusive digital transitions and empowering learners to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes
The course is designed specifically for youth and adult literacy educators who want to improve their digital knowledge and instructional practice. Participants will be able to:
Discover innovative and creative ways to integrate technology into literacy education
Build capacity to design engaging digital learning materials and inclusive learning environments
Advance professional development by exploring emerging educational technologies, including artificial intelligence, for continuous learning
Flexible Learning Structure
The programme includes eleven structured sessions, allowing participants to progressively enhance their digital skills through a flexible and fully self paced learning format. Educators can learn at their own convenience while balancing professional responsibilities.
