MacDowell, an internationally respected residency program dedicated to supporting artists of exceptional talent, is now accepting applications for upcoming Fellowship cycles. Each year, approximately 300 artists across seven disciplines are awarded residencies based solely on artistic excellence.
A MacDowell Fellowship provides time, space, and a supportive residential environment designed to foster deep creative focus and productivity. Fellows receive exclusive use of a private studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals daily for up to eight weeks. There are no residency fees, and need-based stipends and travel reimbursement grants are available to ensure access for artists from a wide range of backgrounds.

- Film and Video
- Interdisciplinary Arts
- Literature
- Music Composition
- Theatre
- Visual Arts
Artists from all countries and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Applicants whose proposed projects do not clearly fall within one of these categories should contact the admissions office for guidance.
Application Cycles and Deadlines
Fall–Winter 2026/27 Residencies
For stays between 1 September 2026 and 28 February 2027
- Applications open: 15 January 2026
- Application deadline: 10 February 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST
- Notification: End of April 2026
Spring–Summer 2027 Residencies
For stays between 1 March and 31 August 2027
- Applications open: 15 August 2026
- Application deadline: 10 September 2026
- Notification: End of November 2026
Applicants may submit only one application every 24 months, and MacDowell will only accept applications for the upcoming deadline at any given time.
What the Selection Panels Look For
Applications are reviewed by discipline-specific panels of distinguished professionals. Panels assess:
- Prior professional achievements and artistic track record
- Work samples demonstrating current practice
- The proposed project and what the applicant hopes to accomplish during the residency
MacDowell encourages applicants to prepare their submissions carefully and to reach out to the admissions team with any questions before applying.

Eligibility
Applicants must be working in one of the eligible disciplines listed above. MacDowell welcomes artists at many stages of their careers, provided they are not enrolled in a degree-seeking program during the residency season for which they are applying. Doctoral candidates who have completed all coursework may apply.

The campus provides barrier-free access in main buildings and select studios, and artists with specific access needs are encouraged to contact MacDowell in advance to discuss accommodations.

All applications must be submitted through MacDowell’s online portal. Applicants are encouraged to review the Application FAQs and Guidelines before starting.
Work Samples
Applicants must submit work samples created within the past four years that support the proposed project. Samples are uploaded through the application system. Those unable to submit new work should include a brief explanation.

MacDowell has temporarily suspended the reference letter requirement in an effort to reduce barriers and promote equitable access.
Processing Fee
A nonrefundable processing fee of USD 30 is required with each application. Applicants experiencing financial hardship or affected by government-imposed economic sanctions may request a fee waiver by contacting admissions@macdowell.org before submitting their application.
Collaborations and Collectives
MacDowell welcomes collaborative teams of two artists, each submitting an individual application and joint project description. Beginning in January 2026, collectives of three to twelve people may apply through a dedicated collective application.
Guests and Residency Policies
To preserve the residential community, overnight guests and family members are not permitted. Day visitors may be hosted if accompanied at all times. Service animals are welcome, while other pets must remain off campus. MacDowell also offers financial assistance to cover childcare expenses during residencies.
