Moonshots for Development: Scaling AgTech Innovation for a Resilient Future

In an era defined by climate volatility and shifting global food demands, the backbone of our global food system—the smallholder farmer—faces unprecedented challenges. However, where there is great challenge, there is even greater opportunity for innovation.

The Moonshots for Development (M4D) Alliance has officially opened its Open Innovation Challenge, a global call to action for visionary startups and tech-driven innovators. With a potential funding pool totaling up to $360,000 USD per team, this program is designed to transform agricultural landscapes and empower rural communities across the globe.

A Global Coalition for Local Impact

The M4D Challenge is not just a competition; it is a high-level collaboration powered by a powerhouse coalition of international development leaders. The initiative brings together the collective expertise of organizations such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the IDB Lab.

Supported by the CGIAR Accelerate for Impact Platform (A4IP), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), this alliance provides selected startups with a unique gateway into some of the world’s most influential developmental networks. This is a rare chance to pilot solutions with the backing of the International Innovation Hub (IIH) and the European Institute of Innovation for Sustainability (EIIS).

The Four Innovation Tracks

The 2026 M4D Challenge focuses on four critical levers that can build truly resilient food systems. Innovators are invited to submit solutions under the following themes:

1. Insurance Solutions for Resilient Food Systems

Smallholder farmers are often one bad season away from poverty. M4D seeks digital platforms and financial products that improve the uptake of climate, crop, and livestock insurance. The goal is to lower costs and increase transparency, ensuring that when disaster strikes, farmers have a reliable safety net.

2. Reducing the Drivers of Fragility

Operating in fragile contexts requires a “do no harm” approach. This track targets solutions that address the root causes of vulnerability—such as weak governance or natural shocks—to maintain institutional stability and support rural communities even as local situations evolve. Applicants should demonstrate how their innovation contributes to long-term prevention and resilience.

3. Digital Extension for Accountable Service Delivery

How do we get the right information to the right farmer at the right time? This track looks for data-driven extension platforms and automated decision-support systems that enhance the efficiency and accountability of agricultural advisory services. Pilots must strengthen local institutions and their ability to reach end-users effectively.

4. Agroecology for Productive, Climate-Resilient Systems

This track focuses on the transition to sustainable production by bridging ecosystem services with inclusive market access. M4D is looking for ways to scale agroecological practices through bio-inputs, soil restoration, and small-scale mechanization. We are particularly interested in the application of Earth observation data tailored to diversified production systems.

The Tech Edge: Solutions that leverage Geospatial Analysis or AI for Good are of particular interest. Whether it’s using satellite imagery to predict yields or AI to personalize advisory services, high-tech integration is a significant advantage for your application.

The Innovation Journey: From Bootcamp to Global Scale

M4D offers a structured, phased approach to ensure that your innovation isn’t just funded, but successfully implemented and scaled.

The journey begins with Phase 0, a virtual bootcamp designed as a dynamic launchpad. Here, teams engage in business model development enriched by a month of personalized mentorship. This phase sets the critical foundation for all subsequent stages of the challenge.

Following the bootcamp, selected teams progress to Phase 1, where startups can secure up to $10,000 USD in initial funding. This stage focuses on foundation building, offering bespoke coaching tailored to your unique business needs and providing exclusive access to M4D’s invaluable resources.

The momentum increases in Phase 2, where top-performing teams can receive up to $100,000 USD. This funding is accompanied by comprehensive pilot and implementation support, allowing you to bring your vision to life in a real-world context. Finally, those who reach Phase 3 have the potential to earn up to $250,000 USD in additional funding, receiving unparalleled support to scale their enterprise to new heights and maximize global impact.
