The City of Boston Summer Internship Program is now open for applications. This paid, full-time internship offers hands-on experience across City departments, giving participants the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that directly serve Boston residents.

The program is administered by the City of Boston Office of Human Resources and is designed to provide real-world experience in local government while building professional skills.

Intern Responsibilities

Interns will engage in a variety of tasks depending on their assigned department. Responsibilities may include:

  • Creating presentations, drafting reports, and informational materials

  • Designing content for social and digital media channels

  • Conducting research and analyzing data

  • Providing direct assistance to constituents

  • Supporting special events and community meetings

  • Designing marketing and promotional materials

  • Supporting administrative functions

  • Managing databases and organizing information

The program emphasizes hands-on experience. Interns will work on real projects, solve complex problems, and receive feedback throughout the summer.

Last summer, interns were placed across more than 20 departments and offices, contributing to projects related to education, housing, sustainability, communications, equity, economic opportunity, and language access.

Professional Development

The expanded Professional Development Program includes:

  • A four-part workshop series exploring public service careers

  • Workplace skill-building sessions

  • Networking opportunities

  • A collaborative Summer Group Project

Interns work together to research City initiatives and propose creative ways to share programs with broader audiences.

Program Dates and Structure

The 2026 Summer Internship Program will run from June 1, 2026 to August 14, 2026.

This is a full-time internship, with interns scheduled to work 35 hours per week.

Interns are expected to report to their assigned office for the duration of the program. However, departments and supervisors may approve remote work requests in accordance with the City of Boston’s Hybrid Work policy.

Compensation

Interns will be paid $20 per hour.

Please note:

  • Interns are not eligible for employee benefits such as health insurance or transit benefits.

  • This is a paid hourly position.

Eligibility Requirements

The City of Boston Summer Internship Program 2026 is open to individuals who:

  • Are at least 18 years old

  • Are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program or have 2–4 years of post-secondary school work experience

  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Can collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds

  • Demonstrate effective time management and task prioritization skills

  • Show interest in serving the community and willingness to learn

Residency Requirement

Boston residency is required.

If selected, interns must provide proof of residency within the City of Boston by May 29, 2026, and no later than the first day of the internship. You can find the residency requirements for city workers on the official website here.

Selection Process

Step 1: Application Review

Step 3: Virtual Group Interview

Finalists participate in a virtual group interview.

Step 4: Cohort Selection and Placement

HR selects the final cohort and matches interns with departments based on skills, interests, and departmental needs.
