The Robins Foundation has officially opened applications for its first Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) SPARK Grant Cycle of 2026, offering a major funding opportunity for nonprofit organizations committed to improving outcomes for young children and their families. Applications opened on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, marking the first of two ECCE SPARK grant cycles planned for the year. A second cycle is expected to open in July 2026.
Through this grant cycle, the Robins Foundation continues its long-standing commitment to strengthening early childhood systems and ensuring that children have access to high-quality care and education during their most formative years. Grant awards will begin at $25,000, with priority given to initiatives that foster strong learning environments, support the early childhood workforce, and influence long-term systems change.
About the ECCE SPARK Grants
The ECCE SPARK Grants are designed to support nonprofit organizations whose work directly or indirectly benefits children from prenatal stages through age five. The foundation recognizes that early childhood experiences play a critical role in brain development, school readiness, and lifelong wellbeing. As a result, funded projects must align with the foundation’s strategic focus on strengthening early learning ecosystems.
For the 2026 grant cycle, Robins Foundation will prioritize programs and initiatives that demonstrate impact in the following areas:
- Exceptional learning environments that promote healthy development and early learning
- Positive adult–child interactions, including evidence-based caregiving and teaching practices
- Sustainable workforce development, particularly initiatives that support early childhood educators
- Policy and advocacy efforts that improve systems and conditions for young children and families
Mandatory Pre-Application Conversation
All applicants are required to complete a mandatory pre-application conversation with the Robins Foundation’s Program Director, Meg Pienkowski. These conversations will take place between January 26 and February 6, 2026.
The purpose of this call is to:
- Confirm alignment between the applicant’s project and the foundation’s funding priorities
- Provide clarity on grant expectations and requirements
- Ensure that submitting a full application is a productive use of time for both parties
Applicants must first complete the eligibility quiz and pre-application questionnaire, which became available on January 21, 2026, before scheduling a call. Only organizations that complete this step will be invited to submit a full application.
Key Application Deadlines
Applicants should take note of the following important dates:

Focus Areas for Funding
Robins Foundation funds projects across four primary focus areas, all centered on supporting children ages 0–5 and the families and professionals who care for them:
- High-quality programs directly serving young children
- Family engagement initiatives that strengthen caregiver involvement
- Workforce supports, including professional development and retention strategies
- Policy and advocacy efforts that improve early childhood systems
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the 2026 ECCE SPARK Grant Cycle, applicant organizations must:
- Primarily support children and families from prenatal stages through age five
- Serve communities in Richmond City, Chesterfield, Henrico, and/or Petersburg
- Be recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
Organizations that received a Robins Foundation grant in December 2025 are asked to wait until the next grant cycle before applying.
Ineligible Projects and Activities
While Robins Foundation values a wide range of community-based work, some proposals fall outside its current funding priorities. The foundation does not fund projects that focus solely on:
- Travel to conferences, meetings, or events
- Covering budget shortfalls or general cash flow needs
- Capital investments or major building projects
- Religious-based activities
Organizations with religious affiliations may still apply, provided that their programs, curriculum, and admissions policies are secular.
Additionally, proposals centered exclusively on providing basic needs—such as food, housing, or clothing—are not eligible. While the foundation acknowledges the importance of addressing these needs, its board has made a strategic decision to focus limited resources specifically on early childhood care and education.
