Skills demand for Oldham's workforce leads to additional learning opportunities

back to news and projects

Unemployment in Oldham is rising, and employers are requiring a more skilled workforce, and almost 25% of the working population in Oldham don’t have any qualifications.

However, help is at hand for all local residents through Highway to Opportunities, the local Learndirect centre. H20 Training Manager Rebecca Dean is urging people to seize the moment in the new year and expand their skills.

‘If anyone out there is thinking of learning something new, or updating old skills then I would strongly urge them to come into H20 to see what Learndirect can offer them.’ ‘There are lots of courses available from brushing up English and maths skills and complete beginners to computers through to the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). There really is something for everyone, courses are individual and you can learn at your own pace and at the end of the day it  can lead to recognised qualifications.’

One student commented ‘It was easier than learning in a classroom, and even though I found one of the modules quite hard, the way the teachers and programme help you through it makes it easier to understand….my qualifications have led to a much wider range of job opportunities, I would definitely recommend it.’

As competition for jobs increases in the borough it’s an ideal opportunity for people to come into the centre and see what courses are on offer. Alternatively they could log on to the Learndirect website: www.learndirect.co.uk

Highway to Opportunities is based on Union Street, and Learndirect staff can be contacted on 0161 621 9200.
